Job Description

Quest Diagnostics is currently recruiting for a Director of Bioinformatics for our Esoteric Business Unit, located in San Juan Capistrano, CA.  The Director of Bioinformatics is responsible for the overall requirements definition, design, development and deployment of bioinformatics systems in support of laboratory testing and research that are beyond the scope and capabilities of the standard Information Technology functions to adequately support.

The Director of Bioinformatics reports to the VP of Science and Innovation and aligned dotted line to the SVP, Information Technology.

Responsibilities include providing expert scientific guidance in the design and maintenance of algorithms and interpretation systems for genotyping assays, developing, maintaining and utilizing in-house sequencing databases in support of assay interpretation and QC systems, along with developing bioinformatics systems including specialized LIMS systems in the labs when they are beyond the capabilities of the Information Technology function.  Liaise with vendors, develop reports derived from databases for use in operations, and assuring bioinformatics assay components are in compliance with all applicable licensing regulations. 

 

Requirements

The Director of Bioinformatics will aid the lab staff and Medical Director to develop and implement short and long range medical and scientific objectives for the departments. There is a strong need for ongoing research and development of bioinformatics tools and systems to support new assays and improvements for current assays.

Qualified candidates should have a minimum of a PhD or MA/MS degree in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics or a related field related to clinical medicine.  We are seeking individuals with 10+ years of progressive laboratory experience and 7+ years of increasingly greater managerial responsibilities.  Experience integrating publicly or commercially available genetic, genomic, and pathway/network datasets with novel experimental data and extensive programming experience pertinent to analysis of large and diverse data sets is desired.  Knowledge of one or more of UNIX, R, C/C++, Java, Perl/Python, MySQL and familiarity with Java/C/C++ platforms is a plus.
