Job Description

10x Genomics is looking for an outstanding scientist and leader to lead and grow its Biochemistry Department.  The ideal candidate will be an excellent manager of people and posses a deep background in biochemistry, as well as a broad understanding of a range of technologies related to next generation sequencing. This person needs to be a strategic thinker on both technology and product development.  He/she should have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, be driven by making great products, and enjoy working in a truly multi-disciplinary environment.  This position will interact closely with colleagues in computational biology, applications, chemistry, microfluidics, engineering, and software.

Key Responsibilities
 

  • Lead biochemistry department working on assay development, enzymology, sample preparation and related technologies across multiple product lines
  • Drive biochemistry technology roadmap
  • Articulate and execute on strategic plans for technology development in key technical areas across both early and mature stages in product development
  • Develop detailed resource plans, including budgeting and hiring
  • Work with other departments to help develop efficient processes for product development as the company and product portfolio grows
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to biochemistry group members as well as people in other departments
  • Provide deep technical analysis and insights to help solve hard and important problems
  • Recruit key talent in targeted technical areas
Requirements
  • PhD in biochemistry or related field
  • Extensive experience managing teams of scientists from a variety of backgrounds
  • Experience developing commercial products
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • A strong desire to build game-changing technologies and impact the world of life science research 
  • Significant exposure to enzymology
  • Hands-on experience working with existing NGS platforms (e.g., Illumina, Ion Torrent, PacBio, etc.)
  • Experience with NGS-related products such as Agilent SureSelect target capture, Ion AmpliSeq, Fluidigm single cell sequencing, etc.
  • Experience with DNA and/or RNA extraction methods
  • Experience with other laboratory assays including real-time PCR, droplet digital PCR
  • Experience in Single-Cell Genomics a significant plus
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment
