Job Description

The Design Engineer, Molding R&D is a creative, out-of-the-box mold/tool designer able to realize complex and innovate tool designs in a fast-paced, medical device R&D environment in support of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products. This position will support multiple projects within the R&D Tooling & Molding group for pre-production parts and verification of design concepts. The position requires experience with mold design, plastic part design, fixtures, EDM electrodes, and other relevant areas of injection-molding manufacturing. The position will interface internally with the R&D Tooling & Molding team, externally with outside tooling & molding vendors as well as design engineers across Cepheid, and will also support documentation, reporting, and QC measurement activities.

 

The ideal candidate has had hands-on experience in a molding or tooling environment, has a strong background in CAD/SolidWorks, has good machine shop practices, and exhibits excellent communication, organization, and project management skills. This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Molding R&D.

 

  • Designs complex 3D molds/parts/assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Creates detailed 2D engineering drawings for molds and components
  • Designs secondary tooling components such as EDM electrodes and fixtures
  • Reviews, proposes, and drives changes to improve manufacturability (DFM)
  • Collaborates and communicates with multiple Cepheid engineering groups to drive their projects to completion, including communication and resolution of issues through site visits, meetings, conference calls, and hands-on troubleshooting/investigation efforts
  • Works with external vendors to drive tool designs, quotes, and ordering of molds/bases/components/materials/etc.
  • Provides a support role to the R&D team for acquisition of equipment/materials/supplies
  • Performs project management duties to determine project scope, schedule, and requirements, and manages schedule and deliverables to completion
  • Responsible for managing engineering data and performing documentation tasks
  • Compiles and maintains SOPs and work instructions, compliant with an FDA/ISO regulated environment in a cleanly-maintained work area
  • Performs QC measurement/inspection & compiles reports
  • Maintains the confidentiality of activities and projects within the R&D group
  • Maintains and promotes safety & quality in all aspects of the job function
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of experience and education to perform at this level
  • 5 years’ experience in an injection molding / tool making environment
  • 3 years minimum SolidWorks design experience
  • Experience in injection-mold/tool design
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD & T)
  • Experience in measurement/inspection equipement such as CMM and/or optical proflimetry
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Strong written communication and skills in writing of engineering reports
  • Strong understanding of molding / manufacturing practices
  • Strong computer and MS Office software skills
  • Basic understanding of statistics and sampling/inspection approaches
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • A team player that can work cross-functionallty at all levels
