The CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Vienna pursue ambitious research projects including large-scale genome/epigenome sequencing of cancer samples, rare disease mapping, and a Personal Genome Project that provides whole genome sequencing to selected volunteers and explores the scientific, educational, ethical, and social implications of genomics. We are now looking for a highly motivated bioinformatic data analyst with experiences in large-scale sequencing analysis to contribute to these efforts.

The Project

Depending on the candidate’s prior experience and interests, the focus of the work could be in one or more of the following areas:

  • Analysis of cancer genome, epigenome, and transcriptome data
  • Bioinformatic methods development for single-cell sequencing technologies
  • Computational prioritization of causal genes in rare Mendelian diseases
  • Contribution to Genom Austria (http://www.personalgenomes.org/austria), which is the Austrian Personal Genome Project

 

The Biomedical Sequencing Facility [http://biomedical-sequencing.at]

The successful candidate will be based at the Biomedical Sequencing Facility (BSF) at CeMM, which is headed by Christoph Bock (http://christoph-bock.org/). The BSF is Austria’s first and leading center of expertise for next generation sequencing in biomedicine, and it performs the genome sequencing and analysis for Genom Austria (http://genomaustria.at/). The BSF is equipped with the latest technology for large-scale genome research, including next generation sequencers (Illumina HiSeq and MiSeq technology), 96-well robotic platforms for automated library preparation, dedicated equipment for single-cell analysis, and a powerful scientific computing cluster. The BSF’s mandate includes a strong focus on technology development, contribution to study design and bioinformatic data analysis, as well as training and teaching best practices in high-throughput genomics.

Requirements

The Candidate

We invite applications from candidates who are eager to contribute to the genomics revolution in biomedicine. The ideal candidate has an excellent track record in bioinformatics, human genetics, or a related field (typically including a PhD with or without additional postdoctoral experience although outstanding Master-level applications will also be considered). The exact job description, responsibilities, and salary will be commensurable with experience. All candidates should have prior work experience in world-class institutions. Because CeMM works in highly competitive areas at the forefront of biomedical research, intellectual curiosity, diligence, flexibility, and dedication to science are key success factors.
