Corporate Counsel, Sequencing

Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal support, negotiates and drafts agreements and other documents as a member of Roche’s Molecular Diagnostics / Sequencing Legal Department reporting to Lead Counsel of Sequencing Unit.
  • Supports operation of the business, including research and development, manufacturing, marketing, business development and licensing activities of the unit, in close cooperation with internal stakeholders (e.g. business, finance and patent departments).
  • Interfaces and works collaboratively with other departments in the Roche Group, including global teams, e.g. as part of business development and licensing activities and ensures that Roche corporate procedures are consistently implemented and adhered to.
  • Able to manage and prioritize a large docket of projects efficiently, while maintaining high quality and client satisfaction.
  • Independently conducts legal research, fact gathering and analyses on complex matters in areas of legal responsibility and advises the Sequencing Unit accordingly.
  • Knowledgeable of related legislative, regulatory and judicial developments and trends that may impact the Sequencing Unit and remains current with U.S. state and federal law and regulations applicable to life science, in vitro diagnostic instrument and reagent manufacturers.
  • Counsels and provides appropriate legal services to all levels of the business on a wide range of legal issues.
  • Manages external resources, including outside counsel.
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum: Juris Doctor.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state (CA preferred).
  • At least eight (8) years of major law firm and in-house legal (preferably both) experience as sole or primary attorney handling, complex patent licensing, collaboration, research, development and manufacturing agreements and able to do similar such work autonomously and without the need of more than minimal supervising attorney oversight.
  • Transactional experience in biotech, human in vitro diagnostics, life science or software is preferred.
  • Life science or software technical background preferred but not required.
  • Experience providing IP transactional and commercial legal support of mergers and acquisitions.
  • Experience with drafting, negotiating and counseling with respect to complex collaborative R&D agreements, supply agreements (including OEM manufacturing agreement) and other commercial transactions in the U.S. and/or abroad in the life science , diagnostics, medical device, and/or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Software licensing experience preferred.
  • Having supported a business with a global reach and the capability to effectively manage obtaining and delivering foreign legal advice.
  • Strong understanding of, and ability to implement, technology in legal work.
  • Relevant experience in a respected law firm and/or multinational corporation, preferably in both settings.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain open, candid and trusting work relationships in a matrixed environment.
  • Experience interacting with business people and executives
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member.
  • Ability to efficiently turn-around projects, fulfill oftentime accelerated timelines and manage multiple assignments.
  • Ability to assist in training other team members and support professional development of support staff.
  • Exhibits a high level of objectivity, integrity, motivation, team orientation, professionalism and trustworthiness, and places a high value on the value of doing business with ethics and integrity.
