We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute. The Stanley Center is working to identify the cellular and molecular pathways disrupted in brain disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, by developing and applying assays and tools to understand how implicated genes act in neurons and circuits. This person will develop new computational methods, apply existing methods, interpret results with a biological context, and refine techniques and metrics appropriate for these analysis pipelines.
The candidate will collaborate with laboratory scientists to develop new laboratory methods and must enable the research of these scientists through excellent communication, teamwork, and a focus on creating usable and accessible research software tools. The candidate will work with the Stanley Center’s Assay Development, Neurobiology and Genome Engineering teams. The candidate should have a strong background in mathematics or statistical genetics, have fluency with biology and/or neuroscience, and be able to adapt quickly and be part of a cross-functional team in a rapidly changing environment.

- Develop, apply, document, and maintain computational tools, both for own use and to support analysis by biologist colleagues without formal computational training. Critically evaluate computational solutions, finding and addressing failure modes on one’s own.
- Develop customized computational solutions supporting new kinds of assays and experiments. Understand the analytical needs of new experiments, working closely with biologists and chemists.
- Follow relevant scientific literature to ensure use of optimal methods and understand emerging practices across the field.
- Implement and optimize successful algorithms and methods for use by the broader community.
- Contribute to reports and papers for presentation and publication. Present at scientific conferences, as needed.
- Develop figures and reports, which provide transparency into the data quality and characteristics, and automate the production of such reports.
- Help implement analysis methodologies into software tools for publication and distribution to the psychiatric disease research community.
- Attend lab and project team meetings on a semi-regular basis to ensure continuous communication around methods and tools developed.
- Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, biology, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience designing computational methods and tools, including prior experience with algorithms relevant to computational biology, and skill and experience with statistical analysis is strongly preferred
- Must have demonstrated proficiency with several of the following technologies: Perl, Python, Java, Matlab, R, C, C++, Unix
- Basic understanding of molecular biology
