Job Description


The Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Medical Technologist ensures that complex molecular diagnostic assays and systems are performed under appropriate CLIA compliance and regulatory requirements.  Independently performs clinical lab testing and other scientific examinations, record appropriate test documentations, and evaluates test results.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Identify, prioritize, and process all clinical samples while ensuring viability and sample integrity throughout the test process
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test processes and evaluate results produced relative to the diagnostic assessment
  • Assist in evaluating data for accuracy and verify any questionable finding with proper documentation, thorough investigation, and appropriate follow-through
  • Calculate results using testing data with both manual and computerized procedures
  • Complete testing processes with minimal errors using written policies, procedures and other appropriate resources
  • Evaluate and monitor quality control programs; reviews results, worksheets, and other data for accuracy and completeness
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration in accordance with applicable policies and procedures
  • Adhere to quality control guidelines to ensure specimen integrity and result accuracy
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of reagents and consumables to prevent shortages
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Provide technical guidance to laboratory associates and assistants, assist training new employees, and provide cross training as needed
  • Review and edit technical instructions and standard operating procedures
  • At level II is proficient and able to perform multiple complex molecular procedures throughout the day
  • At level II may participate in instrument and test methodology, evaluation, and selection
  • At Sr. level provide guidance and development to lower levels and directs work flow
  • At Sr. level may provide input for development, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures to provide consistent quality lab services
  • At Sr. level in the event that the lab director, technical supervisor, or Lead CLS are unavailable they would be designated as the on-site supervisor
  • At Lead level provides expertise and serves as a technical knowledge resource for lower levels
  • At Lead level provides oversight for shift operations and scientific support to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory testing
  • At Lead level in the event that the lab director and technical supervisor are unavailable, they would be designated as the on-site supervisor


Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

  • Regularly walks, stands, and sits
  • Regularly works with equipment, tools and on a computer
  • Frequently lifts up to 25 pounds when receiving shipments for up to 1 hour per week
  • Exposed to extreme cold for typically 30 minutes per week when assisting with removing samples from freezers or walk in refrigerator
  • Exposed to hazardous materials (dry ice) on a daily basis
  • Must follow lab safety practices when working in freezer or with hazardous materials including use of personal protective equipment such as: gloves, lab coats, and safety glasses
  • Must be able to read and understand scientific and complex directions


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills including statistical analysis and laboratory information systems
  • Experience with accreditation inspections and writing and editing laboratory Standard Operated Procedures (SOP)
  • Experience with high-throughput genotyping technologies and sequencing
  • Previous molecular diagnostics experience including DNA isolation, PCR, RT-PCR, Real-Time PCR, capillary electrophoresis and DNA sequencing
  • At level I uses professional concepts and policies and procedures to solve routine problems; works on problems of moderate scope; minimal independent decision making; independently performs moderate to somewhat complex clinical tests
  • At level II uses professional concepts and policies and procedures to solve a wide range of difficult problems; works on problems of diverse scope; exercises independent decision making within defined practices; independently performs complex clinical tests
  • At Sr. and Lead level uses professional concepts in accordance with objectives to solve complex problems; works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of factors; exercises independent judgment to determine methods and procedures on new assignments; demonstrated success in clinical testing technical proficiency, scientific knowledge, and collaboration with others; provides guidance to lower levels
  • NY licensed or license-eligible for Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT) title
  • Strong molecular genetics/molecular diagnostics background
  • BS in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related area
  • NGS experience a plus
  • CLT/Med Tech level I: 0-3 years related experience
  • CLT/Med Tech level II: 3-8 years related experience
  • Sr. CLT/Med Tech and Lead level: minimum of 8 years related experience
