Job Description

The chief financial officer position is accountable for the administrative, financial, and risk management operations of the company, to include the development of a financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.

Also participates and oversees a variety of administrative roles including duties normally associated with human resources. Provides human resource services to all parts of the company. 



  1. Assist in formulating the company's future direction and supporting tactical initiatives
  2. Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans
  3. Develop financial and tax strategies
  4. Manage the capital request and budgeting processes
  5. Develop performance measures that support the company's strategic direction



  1. Participate in key decisions as a member of the executive management team
  2. Maintain in-depth relations with all members of the management team
  3. Manage the accounting, human resources, investor relations, legal, tax, and treasury functions
  4. Manage any third parties to which functions have been outsourced
  5. Oversee the company's transaction processing systems
  6. Implement operational best practices
  7. Oversee employee benefit plans, with particular emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package
  8. Supervise, provides leadership and training to other members of the Finance & Administrative staff
  9. Train and mentor employees concerning financial matters that impact their departments
  10. Serve as the company’s human resources manager conducting duties required including overseeing bi-monthly payroll, assistance in recruiting and on-boarding personnel for open positions, and developing and managing the conduct of the Company’s performance review process


Financial Information

  1. Oversee the issuance of financial information
  2. Report financial results to the board of directors and shareholders
  3. Provide effective reporting on spending funded by grants. Negotiate indirect cost rates. Make filings with funding agencies and collect properly due funding.


Risk Management

  1. Understand and mitigate key elements of the company's risk profile
  2. Monitor all open legal issues involving the company, and legal issues affecting the industry
  3. Construct and monitor reliable control systems
  4. Maintain appropriate insurance coverage
  5. Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
  6. Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies
  7. Report risk issues to the audit committee of the board of directors
  8. Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations



  1. Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts
  2. Arrange for debt and equity financing
  3. Invest funds
  4. Manage Company’s 401K plan


Third Parties

  1. Participate in meetings with the investment community
  2. Maintain banking relationships



Desired Qualifications: The candidate chief financial officer should have a master's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation.  Should have experience in partnering with an executive team, and have a high level of written and oral communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates with an MBA in Finance and the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.

Additional Qualifications: The chief financial officer must also take on the role of the controller. Therefore the candidate must have strong personal computer skills (proficiency in MS Office products and spreadsheet experience). The candidate must be a strong team player able to work with others in identifying company needs in order to develop and manufacture high quality products at a competitive cost. Will be expected to work closely with others in the Manufacturing and Marketing & Sales groups to increase efficiency and decrease costs.


Must have received the status of a Certified Public Accountant.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds.


Work Environment: Working conditions are normal for an office/laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. however, the position does require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
