Job Description – Cancer/Prenatal Genetic Counselor – Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) has an opening for a cancer/prenatal genetic counselor. The genetic counselor filling this position will work closely with two other genetic counselors to provide genetic counseling services to patients referred to BCM from Houston area oncology, maternal fetal medicine, obstetrical, and reproductive endocrinology practices, while being integrated into a larger group of more than 10 genetic counselors across the prenatal and cancer services at BCM. He/She will provide genetic counseling to patients referred for a variety of cancer, prenatal, and preconception indications. The counselor will also provide education to the referring practices, act as a liaison between patients, referring physicians, and other healthcare providers, and serve as a resource for the referring practices for complex genetic cases and issues.
The Department of Molecular & Human Genetics at BCM is one of the leading genetic departments in the world, offering unparalleled clinical treatment and counseling and a full range of diagnostic genetic testing through our Medical Genetics Laboratories. As the largest clinical genetic program in the country, we offer a single resource for all genetic services and testing, thanks to our affiliations with other medical departments and hospitals within the world-renowned Texas Medical Center.
Qualifications for the position include:
• Degree: Master of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling granted by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or a comparable Master’s degree program
• Certification: Board certified or Board eligible in Genetic Counseling by either the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
This position provides significant opportunity for teaching and clinical supervision of medical students, graduate students, and genetic counseling students. Genetic counselors at BCM are also actively involved in research, community outreach, continuing education and regional and national professional societies.
