Job Description

This position offers the chance to build a sales and business development function for a start-up company. It requires the ability to happily function throughout the customer value chain - from assisting lab technicians running sample analyses to talking to C-level partners on partnership propositions. 

It requires knowledge of the current global landscape, the drive to get out there, understand customer and partner needs and feed-back to the business on how we can deliver to make their lives easier.

You will: 

  • Drive awareness and uptake of our current product portfolio (including HIV, TB and SARS-CoV-2 genotyping tests) with diagnostic and research customers.

  • Follow up with users and train customers on the current product portfolio

  • Execute innovative information-sharing opportunities to create awareness of our products and capabilities and generate interest in relevant audiences

  • Regularly report to the management team on the market trends, dynamics and customer expectations

  • Be CRM focussed to ensure maintenance of current accounts and identify new opportunities

  • Seek out and build partnerships and collaboration opportunities with life sciences providers who operate in other parts of the value chain 

  • Generate proposals that both meet the technical needs of the customer and are in line with the company focus

  • Confidently interact with other key stakeholders in the market – regulatory organisations, funders and international health organisations (e.g. the WHO; the FDA; NIH)

  • Work with the Company’s senior management team to ensure that what we do internally aligns with what is happening in the market.

  • Drive progress in a way that actively contributes to the company goals in addition to promoting individual success

As a small start-up company you will have a unique opportunity to shape the position and really grow with the role. Requirements

The company is based in Cape Town, South Africa but we all work remotely so you will be free to be based in the location of your choice. The role is not limited to a geographic region and the scope for this is global.  You will be travelling a lot with the role (COVID restrictions notwithstanding) so being based near a transport hub would be preferable.

This role requires a unique combination of skills - sound technical and scientific knowledge; the ability to engage with people effectively and have an understanding of the wider market context. In addition you will be a self-starter who is comfortable with taking responsibility for a wide range of roles and will be excited by the opportunity to create a new structure rather than slotting into a corporate culture.

  • You will have technical knowledge of DNA sequencing, genotyping, diagnostic assays and panels, with an associated degree (MSc or PhD) or working experience in computational biology/genetics or a related specialty

  • You will ideally come with a global network in the genetic diagnostics space and have experience of engaging with researchers, clinicians, instrument and reagent suppliers, funders and other stakeholders at a senior level.

  • You  enjoy working with people and collaborative problem-solving but will be happy working independently and directing your own efforts

  • You have strong communication skills and are a self-starter who can initiate and direct your own efforts with a strong sense of accountability.

  • Your skills will have been honed over at least 5 years working in the space - prior experience in technical sales and managing product support is preferred

  • You are happy to travel up to 50% of your time and have your own transport
