Job Description

The Helix Bioinformatics team is seeking passionate and motivated individuals to join our cross-functional team to develop and apply cutting-edge approaches to processing, analyzing, annotating, and interpreting population-scale human genome sequence data for consumer products. You will work closely with lab operations, engineering, applied genomics, product, and design, to create our world-class genomics platform.  If you like the idea of building out a large-scale clinical genomics platform and changing the way everyone understands their DNA, then this is the ideal opportunity for you.

As a Bioinformatics Scientist at Helix, your responsibilities may include:

  • Delivering the highest quality genetic data to customers
  • Designing, implementing, and testing novel next-generation sequencing analysis methods
  • Development of best-practices for quality assessment, control, and benchmarking of sequencing assays and analysis methods
  • Supporting laboratory R&D efforts in a large-scale production environment
  • Wrangling large datasets and generating insightful reports
Requirements

Required background:

  • PhD or MS and equivalent experience in Genetics, Biology, or Bioinformatics, or related field
  • Significant experience in hands-on analysis of next-generation sequencing data, particularly WES or WGS
  • Quantitative training with basic understanding of probability and statistics
  • Ability to be self-driven and work well together in a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency in Unix environments
  • Experience with high performance computing environments and/or cloud-based environments
  • Programming experience using statistical tools such as R and scripting languages such as Perl, Python, or Ruby
  • Responsive to feedback
  • Keen attention to detail


Ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience developing new methods for analyzing next-generation sequencing data
  • Familiarity with development or management of pipelines in production environments
  • Experience with genome-wide association studies or human population genetics / statistical genetics including imputation and haplotyping
  • Experience with communicating results and concepts to a diverse audience including geneticists, engineers, laboratory scientists and business development professionals
  • Familiar with application-level programming languages such as Java or C/C++
