Job Description

The UVa School of Medicine's Office of Research Core Administration seeks a Bioinformatics Analyst. The analyst will work closely with the core director and other staff to assist in experimental design and provide expert consultation, technical, and scientific support for UVA investigators, and assist in outreach and training activities. The analyst will identify opportunities and implement solutions for managing, visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting genomic data using high-throughput sequencing data in human, model organisms, and microorganisms. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to translate biological questions into technical designs, and to identify, prioritize, and execute bioinformatics tasks to meet project goals and deadlines. The analyst will participate in meetings and consultations with clients to discuss design and interpretation, and will assist in manuscript and grant preparation.

The Office of Research Core Administration supports research cores in the School of Medicine which were established to make research more efficient and cost effective. The cores allow the presence of specialized instruments and personnel that individual laboratories cannot afford. Personnel in the cores provide expertise on the capabilities of their instruments and services and develop new applications for their techniques. The cores provide training and support for user operated instruments.

About Our Organization

The new Bioinformatics Core at UVA serves as a centralized resource for providing expert and timely bioinformatics consulting and data analysis solutions. The core offers services to investigators both within and outside UVA on both grant-funded and chargeback-based projects for management and analysis of large-scale biological datasets produced by high-throughput genomics experiments.

The Bioinformatics Core’s mission is to build and maintain an infrastructure that enables the application of strong bioinformatics analysis with a measurable impact on the ability of UVA investigators to both publish their work and obtain new funding.
