Job Description

The Boston Children’s Hospital Biobank is an institutional core laboratory.  We provide the research community with a comprehensive repository of clinically annotated human biological materials for research and offer high-quality specimen processing, management, and storage services.

The Biobank is a fast-paced facility experiencing rapid growth, requiring a Laboratory Supervisor who exhibits strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to analyze complex issues and make sound decisions in a timely manner.  Candidate must respond to and lead change, adapting quickly to evolving circumstances, and communicate team goals, priorities, and issues effectively to staff and management.  This is a hands-on role responsible for the day-to-day supervision and oversight of the laboratory operations and services.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Train and supervise staff, including providing continuing education

  • Create and maintain laboratory documentation including standard operating procedures, equipment maintenance logs, specimen shipment receipts, etc.

  • Manage laboratory inventory and equipment, including validation and implementation of automation

  • Monitor laboratory services for accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to deadlines

  • Work with management and staff to develop and implement quality assurance program and ensure compliance

  • Provide knowledgeable and courteous customer support

  • Lead continuous improvement, process optimization, development, and implementation projects for advancement and scale-up of services and throughput

  • Ensure compliance with governmental and hospital regulations

Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience supervising staff in a clinical or research laboratory settings with demonstrated success in leading team members to reach goals and objectives

  • High degree of problem solving and decision making skills

  • Detail-oriented with proficient organizational, writing, and record-keeping skills

  • Efficient time management skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities

  • Able to meet high performance standards with regard to work quality and quantity

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with staff and customers

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems

  • Competency in the use of laboratory equipment and automation

  • Preferred - strong background in molecular biology and/or biobanking

  • Preferred - experience with core facility operations and management

  • Preferred - experience with laboratory accreditation, in particular CAP

  • Preferred - experience in Quality Management Systems
