Job Description

The Sequencing Facility is part of the Clinical Research Technology Program and is operated in support of the NCI Center for Cancer Research CCR to manage the operation of multiple platforms for next-generation and third-generation sequencing in support of NCI investigators.  This is a unique matrix organization that pulls in capabilities from the Advanced Biomedical Computational Center (ABCC), Quality Management (QM) and the Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) Genomics Laboratory. 
The Associate Scientist will be expected to work with the SF director, group leaders, QM, and informatics/technical staff to:  (1)  develop, implement and perform laboratory processes in support of the SF operations, (2) coordinate implementation of  high throughput sample preparation processes into workflows, (3) coordinate updates to equipment, chemistry and processes, (4) identify, research, optimize, and implement new processes or technologies that serve to improve data quality or efficiency of production pipeline, and  (5) remain current with new applications and technologies associated with NGS sample preparation, library construction, sample enrichment and target capture.



  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a scientific discipline or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree  

  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. Equivalency

  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of ten (10) years genomics based laboratory experience

  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology or genetics/genomics, isolation and manipulation of DNA and RNA, PCR, gel electrophoresis, high throughput platforms, applications and technology

  • Familiarity with usage of a LIMS

  • Experience with independent design and performance of experiments

  • Ability to trouble shoot assay or production problems

  • Ability to develop/optimize new assays or production methods under the direction of a lab supervisor or scientist

  • Proficiency with MS Office suite

  • Experience using statistics and analysis software tools


  • Experience with Illumina (Solexa), Roche (454), or sequencer operation and maintenance

  • Work experience in a core/service facility

  • Experience with next gen sequencing development, troubleshooting, analysis, and laboratory automation

  • Ability to train others in new techniques with proficiency
