Job Description

MedImmune currently has an opening for an Associate Scientist (AS) I / II or Associate Engineer (AE) I / II within its Downstream Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MS&T) group in Frederick, MD. The role for this person will include/entail the following:
* Supporting scale-up and technology transfer of manufacturing bioprocesses to commercial facilities; process performance monitoring; implementation of process improvement strategies; development of process models.
* Hands-on, problem-solving and/or laboratory-based role; developing and executing laboratory studies to support MS&T strategies and regulatory filings; troubleshooting manufacturing process and equipment issues.
* Conducting or participating in technically demanding projects .
* Making detailed observations, analyzes data, and interprets results; providing quantitative analyses, as required.
* Authoring, contributing and/or reviewing, as appropriate, technical reports, protocols, manufacturing batch records and other documents.
* Maintaining appropriate, timely documentation.
* Working independently and in collaboration w/others. Functioning effectively as a member of one or more project teams.
* Presenting findings at internal meetings and may present at external scientific meetings.
* Mentoring and performing as a positive role model to other personnel. May have supervisory responsibility.


Works independently, typically with only general supervision.
* Proficient in meeting project goals, providing clear concise updates to colleagues and management, as needed. 
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply novel approaches to challenging problems.
* Capable of developing new methods, technologies, and processes for project advancement, including scale-up and scale-down models; designing and executing efficient experimental plans; identifying, trouble-shooting and solving technical transfer and manufacturing issues.
* Experience and familiarity with bioprocess and analytical technology development: identifying, proposing and/or evaluating technologies to support advancement of Site and Departmental capabilities.
* Knowledge and experience with large-scale bioprocess purification, including chromatography, UF/DF, and normal flow filtration.
* Experience in GMP environment for commercial biopharmaceutical production is strongly preferred.
* Candidates must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and/or holiday hours on a rotating basis. Education:
AS I/AE I Years of experience preferred: Science: BS 5-8, MS 2-5 or 
Engineering BS 2-4; MS 0-2
AS II/AE II Years of experience preferred: Science: BS 8-10, MS 5-8 or 
Engineering BS 5-8; MS 3-5
Prefer industry experience. Additional Notes:*Full knowledge and application of principles, theories, concepts and techniques related to bioprocess purification.
* Productively work with internal customers or outside suppliers on routine and non-routine matters.
* Must establish working relationships and credibility with MS&T Department, Frederick Manufacturing Center, Bioprocess Development colleagues, and other key business partners. 
* Expected to continue and/or establish working relationships and credibility with individuals outside the company.
* Ability to operate effectively within cross-functional teams and influence outcomes.
* Flexibility in positional assignment and willingness to change direction as priorities shift.
