Job Description

Position Summary

Clontech is looking for a highly skilled, creative, and self-motivated scientist to lead a team developing PCR & RT applications and custom enzyme formulations based on Clontech & Takara’s broad array of PCR and RT enzymes. Working closely with customers, Marketing, Business Development, and other members of the R&D team, the successful candidate will manage a team of scientists developing key applications data and custom enzyme formulations.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide key applications data to help promote Clontech/Takara’s enzyme capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Business Development, other scientists within the R&D team, and customers to develop and test novel enzyme formulations focused on PCR and NGS-related applications.
  • Work on small-scale purification / formulation of enzymes of high interest.
  • Develop and test assay methods for determining enzyme performance.
  • Make recommendations for formulation adjustment.   
  • Travel to customer or manufacturing sites, if necessary, to assist in product development / testing.
  • Manage junior scientists or research associates.
Requirements

Education / Experience /Requirements

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology or biochemistry, with 8+ years of experience, including a minimum of 5 years of industry experience required.
  • Expert in PCR, with an in-depth understanding of the role of enzyme and buffer formulations in affecting performance.
  • Successful project leadership experience in industry essential.
  • Experience with product development essential, including leading projects from concept to commercial release.
  • Experience with large-scale enzyme manufacture highly desired.
  • Expert in the design of SOPs, manufacturing procedures, and quality control documents and methods.
  • Familiarity or experience developing assays for enzyme quality control, such as nuclease assays and other tests to detect biological contamination in protein preparations; functional quality control assays; and stability assays.
  • Prior experience managing other scientists or research associates desired.
  • Experience in protein purification methodology strongly preferred.
  • Experience with enzyme and/or buffer lyophilization processes highly desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills – must be able to communicate clearly both within the organization and externally to drive projects forward.
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues related to clinical applications of biological materials a plus.
  • Independent and self-motivated, with a strong sense of urgency and ability to drive a project to completion under tight deadlines.
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks appropriately.
  • Strong interest in technology development and translating scientific ideas into novel applications.
  • Highly effective analytical and problem solving skills, including excellent attention to detail.
  • Collaborative personality with strong interpersonal skills.
