The Imaging Platform within the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard has an opening for a highly motivated associate computational biologist. The Imaging Platform develops and applies methods for extracting quantitative information from high-throughput biological images. We are best known for creating and maintaining CellProfiler, an open-source program that is launched more than 90,000 times per year by biologists around the world. We collaborate with dozens of biomedical research laboratories to identify disease states, potential therapeutics, and gene functions from microscopy images.
We seek an Associate Computational Biologist to join our efforts to glean insights from large collections of images. The work is based on the hypothesis that there is much more information present in microscopy images than is commonly perceived by eye, and that we know very little about the appropriate targets for many diseases. We aim toharvest this information through profiling, and we are working todevelop novel methods that can characterize cellular populations at single-cell resolution such that similarities and differences between the mathematical models correspond to the biological differences between the populations of cells.
We are applying these ideas to several projects, including:
- Predicting how new chemical compounds act in cells,
- Identifying and classifying toxicity of compounds destined for clinical trials,
- Identifying differences in cell structure between patient cells affected by bipolar disorder or schizophrenia,
- Identifying gene function from large-scale genome sequencing studies.

- Your intellectual contributions will be used and recognized across the vast global network of researchers in the biomedical fields.
Together with other members of our data analysis team, you will:
- Explore and characterize biological datasets (mostly derived from microscopy images).
- Identify promising existing analysis methods that may be appropriate for the data, as well as develop novel approaches.
- Implement methods, quantify their performance, and apply them to data from experiments.
- Interpret results and design new experiments.
- B.S. with 3+ years of related experience or M.S. in a related field with 1+ years of related experience in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, bioinformatics, biotechnology, physics; or biology with a strong quantitative background.
- Strong experience with applying machine learning and/or data mining methods, ideally to high-dimensional data.
- Demonstrated ability to write, test, and debug programs written in the programming language Python. Some experience with R, Matlab, C, or
shell scripting is a plus.
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills, as well as a commitment to openness and collaborating in a tightly knit team.
- Outstanding personal initiative.

- Practical experience with Linux environments.
- Some knowledge of biology is useful.
