Job Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is currently seeking an ideal candidate to fill the role of the Assistant Director of Research Operations. The candidate will work with the Director of Research Operations and other members of the Research Operations team to provide the administrative infrastructure and support to ensure the effective and efficient running of CSHL’s research programs. This PhD level position requires someone with a scientific background in biomedical research, outstanding communication skills, excellent decision-making and judgement, the ability to work collaboratively and productively across multiple departments, and solid organizational/project management skills. The Assistant Director will work with Sr. Leadership and faculty to carry out activities and responsibilities of the Department of Research Operations. These include: resource management (core facilities, space, equipment), faculty affairs (recruitment, career development, communications) and research compliance. In addition, they are expected to effectively liaise with the CSHL graduate school, DEI office and CSHL administrative departments on collaborative, cross-departmental efforts. The successful candidate will have a broad scientific background, ability to apply/develop a wide array of administrative skills (financial management; project management; effective communication) and a dedication to supporting research in a team environment.

Specific activities that the Assistant Director would primarily be involved with:
- Develop and oversee process for incoming/departing faculty and core facility staff;
- Oversee Internal/External Communications related to CSHL research programs, including faculty handbook, faculty newsletter, faculty websites/profiles, intranet pages, external web site research-related content;
- Develop and oversee centralized system for shared building services and research equipment.

Other activities (working with Director of Research Operations and other CSHL departments):
- Develop and maintain professional/career development program for faculty and core facility/shared resource staff;
- Develop and manage faculty recruitment processes and policies to support efforts on inclusivity and diversity;
- Organize and manage external advisory groups/meetings, faculty retreats and other events as needed;
- Oversee Young Investigator/Faculty award nominations;
- Develop new materials and training related to Responsible Conduct of Research, and Rigor and Reproducibility;
- Serve as an editor for the Writing Resource Center;
- Serve as an instructor on any workshop or internal course programs related to specific expertise;
- Assist with developing institutional policies/processes/guidelines that impact research (e.g. data management/retention).

Requirements

EDUCATION: PhD in an area related to biomedical research (ideally, cancer, genomics or neuroscience)
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: At least two years postdoctoral experience (academic, industry or administrative). Demonstrable experience/interest in working beyond laboratory bench research; the ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience working in an administrative/non-research position.
