Job Description

New England Biolabs is seeking an Applications and Product Development Scientist to work collaboratively with bench scientists to develop new high throughput sequencing sample-prep methods, build tools, and analyze sequence results.  A successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with data from all major sequencing platforms and a broad range of “next generation” sequencing subtypes (DNA-seq, RNA-seq, Methyl-seq, Small RNA-seq, ChIP-seq).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the NEBNext product development team to create novel NGS sample preparation methods
  • Identify and construct new analysis methods and tools to assess and optimize performance of library preparation steps
  • Analyze sequence results and produce custom visualizations
  • Construct and extend existing systems to integrate sequence results from many experiments

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics or a molecular biology related field with significant data analysis experience or computational training with significant biological experience; Ph.D. preferred
  • Expertise with high volume sequence data analysis
  • Familiarity with basic statistical methods
  • Software development skills using high level languages (e.g. Python, Ruby, and R)
  • Demonstrable scientific communication skills in formal and informal settings
  • Enjoyment of close collaborations with other scientists
  • Appreciation for simple, high quality, maintainable software
  • Strong work ethic, emphasizing both efficiency and quality of work

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Evidence of history of software development (e.g. Github)
  • Cluster computing skills
  • Modern web development skills
  • Experience with Galaxy
  • Experience with scalable computing infrastructure (e.g. AWS and GAE)
  • Laboratory bench experience
