The Equipment Preparer Lead is responsible for assisting the Animal Technician Supervisor in oversight of the quality of work in the cage wash facility. The Equipment Preparer Lead organizes the processing of the rodent facilities' soiled equipment and preparation of items for use. The Equipment Preparer Lead performs and provides direction for general custodial care for areas within the facility, oversees equipment maintenance, and assists with inventory assessment checks for caging supply.
The Equipment Preparer Lead is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal amount of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.
1. Oversees and prepares items for the equipment washers, including removal of soiled bedding, sorting of items into similar batches, soaking designated items and scrubbing items that are especially soiled.
2. In conjunction with the Associate Supervisor, assign duties to preparation staff, set priorities, plan schedules, and insure sanitation and safety procedures are in compliance with established procedures.
3. Train technician staff in policies and procedures.
4. Identify improved methods of facility upkeep in regards to hygiene and efficiency of operations.
5. Maintain open communication with the Associate Supervisor, notifying the Associate Supervisor of any issues that need to be addressed.
6. Delegate and/or participate in completing housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping and garbage removal.
7. Maintain housekeeping, inventory and equipment records.
8. Assist Associate Supervisor in interviewing and selecting Animal Equipment Preparer applicants.
9. Assist Associate Supervisor in monitoring all facilities to ensure compliance with standards and update or compose new SOP's as needed.
10. Help to coordinate work assignments and preparations for facilities inspections; lead tours of facilities as requested.
11. Have a working knowledge of all PPE policies and procedures throughout the small animal vivarium.
12. Ensure appropriate mixing and use of all cleaning solutions.
13. Direct the operation of equipment washers, automatic water bottle filling systems and autoclaves. Perform environmental control tests to insure proper function. Review and maintain records of test results as indicated by the supervisor. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on all equipment maintained within or processed through the cage wash operation.
14. Ensure that clean equipment has been processed correctly and shows no sign of residual waste material or other types of contamination. Record and remove from service all equipment damaged or deemed inappropriate for use.
15. Organize the transfer of bagged animal carcasses to storage areas for pick-up.
16. Formulate the water bottle filling station acidification solutions using proper concentration of hydrochloric acid stock material. Ensure that the proper PPE and safety precautions are used during this process.
17. Prepare the equipment allotment schedule, ensuring that the set up carts of clean animal caging and water bottles for the animal technicians is correct and ready for use.
18. Participate in material management inventory control, notifying the supervisor or designated purchaser of items that need to be ordered.
19. Provide input and work with the Associate Supervisor on employee evaluations.
20. May participate in the transportation of animals or materials between facilities.
21. Attend and participate in assigned training classes.
22. Work weekends, holidays, or on-call shifts as assigned.
23. Perform other duties as assigned.
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated ability to manage other staff as needed.
3. Good verbal and written English communication skills. Ability to prepare written reports. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
4. Good computer skills.
5. Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis and sustained physical activities such as bending, balancing, stooping, reaching, and remain standing for long periods of time.
6. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment including scrubs, gloves, shoe covers, gowns, ear plugs / muffs, and eye protection.
1. 3 full years of experience as an Animal Equipment Preparer or equivalent.
2. American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification.
3. Maintenance of a valid Washington State Driver's License and good driving record.
