Job Description

Scismic is supporting the growth of a biotech company in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts!

This position will organize and direct a team of scientists to develop innovative cell culture media formulations, feed supplements, formats, and workflows to improve growth and productivity for bioprocess customers. It is critical that the candidate is able to plan and manage significant project activities (e.g., scientific strategies and solutions) that meet business expectations through broad industry expertise. The ideal candidate will need to be highly knowledgeable in cell culture media development for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. This role will report to the Sr. Director, Cell Culture Technology & Service. This is a highly visible position and the successful candidate will have routine interactions with senior leadership.


Provides leadership to the CCM R&D organization by performing the following: building a culture of accountability where staff consistently deliver on their commitments; leading organizational change in alignment with long-term strategic goals of the business; developing and empowering staff; cultivating talent; driving talent growth by putting staff in position to succeed; build effective team to achieve common goals.
Actively collaborate with the Product Management team on the new product development roadmaps specifically in formulation development, media hydration, and culture optimization. Must understand customer requirements and be able to translate those requirements to differentiated new products or workflow solutions.
Work with Project Management to ensure clear expectations and project deliverables for team.
Guide and oversee direct reports in the design, execution, and interpretation of scientific results with the end goal of ensuring that projects are delivered on time, on budget and on scope.
Promote close, productive working collaborations between other R&D teams within the division.
Manage group metrics and trends, implementing proactive actions to increase operational efficiency and productivity.
Actively supports the IP development processes.
Champions the identification, development and/or evaluation of innovative new technologies for long-term growth and competitiveness.
Accountable for resource/capacity planning and project prioritization to meet business objectives
Sets guidelines for recording of results; review and approval of protocols, reports, test methods and ROPs generated by staff.
Ensures that work is performed according to company guidelines for legal, safety and regulatory compliance.
Responsible for associate performance reviews, annual training, and acquisition of new talent.



PhD degree in Life Sciences or Biomedical Engineering or related discipline.
Must have 10+ years of direct industry experience in commercial media development and/or experience performing media/process optimization within a R&D/service/biotechnology organization.
Demonstrated leadership skills and experience managing a team of scientists. Must be comfortable in “rolling up his/her sleeves” to drill down into the detail, root cause issues, and resolve problem quickly. A player/coach mentality that holds the team accountable for action and results.
Proven strong leadership ability with the capability to leverage diverse resources, respond quickly, understand the impact of changes and decisions, facilitate agreement, build collaborative relationships, and focus on industry needs.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to feel at ease communicating regularly with technical and business teams. Ability to navigate and work effectively in a diverse and global cross-functional environment.
Ability to partner with and influence key stakeholders (e.g., product management, project management, customer facing teams).
Track record and diverse hands-on experience with industry relevant cells lines (e.g., CHO, HEK 293, Vero) and bioreactor systems required.
