Custodian

Position Description
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is currently seeking multiple hardworking individuals to fill the position of Custodian. The tasks of this person would be to perform any combination of light and heavy cleaning duties to maintain Laboratory buildings, private residences, and hotel guest spaces in a clean and orderly manner. Perform porter services to support Laboratory events along with moving furniture and equipment to meet Laboratory goals.

Position Responsibilities
· Clean office and laboratory spaces, conference and meeting rooms, hallways, lobbies, kitchenettes and lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas throughout the Laboratory.

· Supply restrooms and kitchenettes.

· Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies, using vacuum cleaners.

· Clean building floors by sweeping, scrubbing, mopping along with stripping, sealing, finishing, and polishing floors, as required.

· Dust window blinds.

· Dust and polish furniture.

· Clean windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork, waxing and polishing, as necessary.

· Empty wastebaskets and transport trash and waste to disposal areas.

· Collect Regulated Medical Waste from laboratories and transfer to designated holding rooms; follows procedures as dictated by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.

· Follow procedures for the mixing/use of chemical cleaners along with procedures for the use of power equipment.

· Keep storage areas well-stocked, clean, and tidy.

· Notify supervisor concerning the need for repairs.

· Perform porter duties along with additional tasks as directed by Supervisor, Building Services.
Position Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience: 1 year experience in a custodial position

Skills:

Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs
Ability to work on ladders and step stools
A valid driver’s license is required.
Basic cleaning techniques.
Attention to detail.
