Job Description

At Natera, our goal is to make personalized genomics and medicine a reality at scale. As a Senior Scientist, you will be part of a small, focused research team that is using cutting edge technology and science in order to build scalable, robust, and modular platforms upon which current and future products can be built. You will get to design, execute, and troubleshoot experiments under the guidance of, and in collaboration with, a tight-knit group of scientists and engineers. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about understanding the nuts and bolts of how assays work, relentless about optimizing their experiments, and most of all is excited about being at the forefront of clinical sequencing and having their work used in the clinical care of millions of patients. The Senior Scientist is able to initiate, direct and execute pre-product scientific research. They are tasked with applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problem solving. The Senior Scientist maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and has in-depth experience with next-generation DNA/RNA sequencing, general nucleic-acid technologies or protein screening. Primary Responsibilities Contributes substantially to research and development. Leads projects to create and develop novel nucleic acid or protein based diagnostic tests; including planning, feasibility testing, protocol development, optimization, verification, validation, and launch. Independently designs and executes moderate to high complexity experiments. Coordinates the execution and analysis of effective experiments with statistics and bioinformatics teams. Executes projects as per associated timelines and deliverables. Develops plans, generates and advances new ideas. Performs basic data analysis, including statistics. Documents research progress under a Quality Management System. Manages Research Associates. Communicates progress directly with colleagues and senior management. Help invent new products, and integrate product improvements to somatic and germline applications.


Qualifications Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry or closely related field, or equivalent experience. Minimum of 5 years of industry experience or 2 years of post-doctoral research + 3 years of industry experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA, multiplex PCR, hybrid capture, digital PCR Experience in data analysis, statistics, data interpretation and results reporting. Track record of originating, or developing, novel nucleic acid techniques and tests. Excellent communication, organizational, record-keeping, planning and time management skills. Demonstrated success in applying independent scientific judgment to experimental design and analysis. Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Adept with data analysis and statistical testing using Excel, JMP, R or other data analysis environments. Skilled at writing clear plans, reports and SOPs. Nice To Have Industry experience in product development. Proven success in managing collaborative and individual projects, previous experience managing Research Associates a plus. Bioinformatics capabilities, programming (e.g. PERL, Python) and database experience (e.g. SQL) are a plus. Experience in developing tests in liquid biopsy. Experience with epigenetics/methylation.
