Long Island has been home to many significant advances in STEM research, notably at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University. Through research and collaboration, the fellow will generate new historical knowledge about the scientific contributions of these and other institutions on Long Island, and in so doing raise awareness of the region’s important place in the history of science and technology for the public and scholars. The Gardiner Fellow will develop a two annual Robert D.L. Gardiner exhibitions (both physical and digital) on Long Island’s STEM heritage in collaboration with other Long Island historical societies

The library is also home to CSHL’s Center for Humanities & History of Modern Biology (CFH), which was created in 2018 to host visiting researchers, organize public events, create virtual and physical exhibitions, publish resources for popular and scholarly audiences, and promote broader understanding of past and present science. The proposed Gardiner fellow would be based at the CFH with full access to the CSHL’s library and archives resources and staff.
