A Research Scientist in the Technology Innovation Lab will develop creative strategies and solutions for genomics research, working with a highly motivated team at the cutting edge of methods development and tool building. You should be an independent thinker, able to develop new protocols and novel schemes to tackle complex problems. You will be expected to contribute to existing lab projects, as well as identify unmet needs in genomics and design new approaches to address them. In addition, you will actively work to apply newly developed technologies to collaborations with leading scientists as part of the NYGC’s working groups in cancer, neurodegenerative disease, neuropsychiatric disease and technology development.
Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Design novel strategies to prepare samples and libraries for next-generation sequencing platforms, including methods that capture single-cell and multi-modal data, spatially-resolved data, liquid biopsy, ultra-low quantities, FFPE, long and linked reads, etc.;
- Demonstrate initiative in identifying opportunities for research and collaboration, and work independently, actively and creatively to design and execute strategies to address them;
- Master and improve methods on the newest sequencing instruments, as they arrive;
- Collaborate with technology providers to provide expertise on next-generation sequencing and applications thereof, both within NYGC and in the wider community;
- Maintain significant knowledge of the current, relevant scientific literature, and communicate key developments to other lab members to ensure competitiveness of the group;
- Publish and present high-quality research through journal articles, posters and presentations in a timely manner to the benefit of the research community and to improve the profile of the group and the Center;
- Take an active role in lab meetings, sharing and improving the knowledge of the team and obtaining information relevant to the team’s goals; and,
- Contribute to writing and editing grant applications.
- PhD degree in a relevant discipline such as molecular biology or bioengineering, or equivalent experience with commensurate publication record;
- Extensive experience in molecular biology required; integration of molecular biology experience with genetics, chemistry, biochemistry and/or bio-engineering preferred; significant post-PhD experience highly preferred;
- Deep understanding and experience of modern molecular biology and/or chemistry tools, including next generation sequencing methods highly preferred;
- A consistent track record in creative problem solving is critical;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision but with a strong collaborative temperament;
- Excellent communication skills and experience of writing first-author manuscripts for publication – able to present complex data in simple terms;
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills; and,
- Computing skills essential, and bioinformatics experience highly preferred.

About the New York Genome Center
The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.
Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with twelve leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region and beyond, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university.
