Job Description

Director of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell and Genome Engineering Laboratory

Overview:

You can find the cures you know are out there. At UCLA Health, you make it happen as part of a groundbreaking Research team, working to understand hundreds of medical disorders and improving processes for dozens of procedures across the globe.

Responsibilities

The Institute for Precision Health (IPH) at UCLA seeks an innovative director to build and lead a Stem Cell and Genome Engineering Laboratory. The goal is for the leader to design, construct, develop services, and operationalize the core lab into a cutting-edge program supporting the mission of the institution. The primary focus will be on production of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from human subjects/patients and the use of site-specific endonucleases to directly modify the human genome in cultured cells with a focus on pluripotent stem cells. Considering this is a rapidly evolving field, appropriate research and development technologies need to be put in place to ensure the core remains at the state of the art.

In this role, you will be responsible for the overall operation and administration of the lab, including the management of core lab staff and services, supervising the scientific staff developing human pluripotent stem cell models and performing CRISPR-mediated gene editing. Communication with the core lab clients will be important for maintaining high customer-satisfaction and ensuring daily operations run smoothly. You will also be responsible for communicating progress and results with core customers promptly, accurately and proficiently assuring compliance with the applicable regulations.

In addition to managing the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the core lab, you will provide oversight and direction to the employees in the core lab in accordance with the UCLA policies and procedures. You will coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities. You will report to the scientific director of the core lab and lead the research studies semi-independently, including project planning, performance and management, preparation of scientific reports, abstracts and publications.
