Max Planck Institutes, MIT, Whitehead Institute of Technology, and University of Massachusetts have been awarded US Patent No. 8,895,718 and 8,895,721, both titled "RNA interference mediating small RNA molecules."

Thomas Tuschl, Sayda Elbashir, and Winfried Lendeckel are named as the inventors.
