Ray Biotech Awards 18 Teams Grants for Biomarker Research

Ray Biotech this week announced the winners of its Biomarker Discovery Pilot Grant program.

In all, 18 teams of researchers will receive up to $20,000 each, redeemable in Ray Biotech products. The grants are to "demonstrate that any researcher with a modest research budget can successfully discover and validate disease-related biomarkers using our antibody arrays," Ray Huang, founder and president of the Norcross, Ga., firm said in a statement.

Ray Biotech develops antibody and protein arrays for biomarker research.

He added that the number and quality of applications the company received for the awards was "very high, and the review process was even more selective than most NIH grant competitions." The 18 winning proposals comprised fewer than 10 percent of the number of applications.

"The awardees best presented a clear research plan that set optimistic yet reachable goals, which we felt demonstrated not only significant scientific potential in future biomarker discovery but also aligned with RayBiotech's pioneering vision," Huang said.

Among the winning entries is one that seeks to identify proteins associated with autism; a project to identify the role of protein kinases in gastric cancer; and work to discover novel biomarkers for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
