HUPO director general Paul Stinson has hired four people to serve as paid members of the new HUPO secretariat, which is based in Montreal. Wehbeh Barghachie will serve as congress director and project manager; Elizabeth Cooper will serve as the communications and industry liaison manager; Sandrine Palcy will serve as the training coordinator; and Sylvie Ouellette will serve as the membership and administration coordinator.

All members of the new secretariat are Canadian, except for Palcy, who is from France.


David Schwartz will start his appointment as new director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Toxicology Program on May 23, NIH said this week. He was named director of these institutes last fall. Schwartz comes to NIH from Duke University, where he is director of the pulmonary, allergy, and critical care division and vice chair of research in the department of medicine. He holds an MD from the University of California San Diego, an MPh from Harvard School of Public Health, and a BA in biology from the University of Rochester.
