Life Technologies said this week that the US Department of Agriculture has approved the Applied Biosystems VetMax Gold SIV Detection Kit, a real-time PCR test for detecting swine flu virus in animals.

According to the firm, it is the first real-time PCR test approved by the agency for swine flu virus detection.

Life Tech said that the kit focuses on the pathogen's RNA but also targets multiple genomic regions to decrease the likelihood of false negatives.
