The new systems include an 8,640-core system at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Center for the Study of Systems Biology and a 4,000-core Dell system called "Gladiator" that was installed on the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm Campus.

The upgraded cluster is 10 times faster than the one it replaced, with 36 teraflops of peak performance and around a half petabyte of data in its primary storage.

Though HHMI's endowment declined, due largely to a drop in the value of its investments, the institute increased its number of scientists. It also is pushing foward with its plans to expand the Janelia Farm Research Campus.
