U of Buffalo Adds 1,668-Processor Dell Cluster to Bioinformatics Center
The Center for Computational Research at the State University of New York at Buffalo has expanded the computing capacity in its Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences with a 1,668-processor Dell cluster.
The $2.3 million system nearly doubles the CCR's computing capacity.
The cluster comprises Dell PowerEdge SC1425 and 2850 servers. It has a theoretical peak performance of more than 10 TFlops, with an anticipated sustained performance of more than 7 Tflops. It also includes a 30-terabyte EMC storage system.
The installation brings the total number of processors in UB's CCR to nearly 7,000, extending the center's total theoretical peak performance from approximately 12 Tflops to approximately 22 TFlops.
In addition, the bioinformatics COE has its own 4,000-processor Dell cluster that it installed in 2002, as well as a 546-processor IBM BladeCenter cluster that it installed in 2004.
UB said that one of the first projects that the 834-node cluster will support will be a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental studies designed to help understand how certain forms of cancer originate in the body.
Tripos Installs Chemical Informatics System at Schering AG
Tripos said last week that it has installed its Enterprise Chemical Information Management System (ECIMS) at Schering AG.
The system was deployed to more than 250 users at Schering's sites in Richmond, Calif., in the United States and Berlin and Jena in Germany.
ECIMS is built on an electronic laboratory notebook platform. It stores chemical data and supports the planning, synthesis, and logistics of all compounds, Tripos said.
The company said it expects to make "many of the technologies" developed as part of the ECIMS solution, including the electronic lab notebook, commercially available as standalone products.
Teranode and UW to Develop Methodologies for Microarrays
Teranode said last week that it is collaborating with the University of Washington's Bumgarner Lab and Center for Expression Arrays to develop and publish experiment design automation methodologies for streamlining microarray experiments.
According to Teranode, the collaboration is expected to produce "streamlined operations for the Center for Expression Arrays, open-source extensions to the Teranode XDA [experiment design automation] platform for microarray experiments for use by other facilities, and methodologies for automating a microarray core facility for use by other facilities."
Financial terms of the collaboration were not disclosed.
Oracle to Co-Develop PGx Informatics System with Thailand Life Sciences Center
Oracle Thailand and the Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences will jointly develop a system to gather electronic health records under the TCELS Pharmacogenomics Project, Oracle said last week.
TCELS and Oracle signed a preliminary agreement in January to develop a nationwide system to capture clinical and genetic patient information. Based on technologies provided by Oracle, the project's infrastructure will be developed in collaboration with "selected partners from around the region," according to the company.
TCELS was founded last summer by the King of Thailand to provide a research and investment center for life sciences to benefit Thai citizens and the region.
