Scimagix has introduced ProteinMine 2D-gel analysis and mining software to search 2D electrophoresis gels according to visual criteria.
The software works in combination with the company’s SIMS scientific image management system, a data management system designed to store, search, and retrieve images generated in drug discovery R&D.
ProteinMine was developed as part of an alliance with Pfizer Global R&D, which now uses the 2D-gel application software with SIMS.
Alan Robinson, of the European Bioinformatics Institute, has written a short tutorial for those interested in using Corba within Java or Perl programs for retrieving data from remote databases and applications written in Corba.
The tutorial is available from http://industry.ebi.ac.uk/~alan/CORBA/Tutorials/Introduction.
Ensembl 0.8.0 is now available at www.ensembl.org. EMBL-EBI and the Sanger Center timed its release to coincide with the publication of the human genome analysis papers.
New features include gene family clustering, homologies to mouse genomic sequences, CpG island and tRNA gene predictions, curated gene structures from EMBL/Genbank/DDBJ submissions, links to unigene, and chromosome density plots for genes, SNPs, %GC, and repeats.
