Patrick Purcell has been appointed to the newly created position of vice president, chief information officer at Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen, where he will report to CEO James Mullen.

Prior to joining Biogen, Purcell held a number of finance and IT management positions at Sprint. His most recent position was vice president, IT planning, resource and performance management for Sprint PCS.

SAS subsidiary iBiomatics has named Barbara Tardiff as vice president of biomedical informatics.

IBiomatics, based in Cary, N.C., provides private Web portals for biomedical research. Tardiff will head the company’s biomedical informatics sciences division.

Tardiff most recently served as director of clinical data integration at the Duke Clinical Research Institute at the Duke University School of Medicine.
