Open Medicine Foundation Commits $1.8M to Research ME/CFS at Harvard Hospitals

NEW YORK (GenomeWeb) – The Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) announced today that it has committed $1.8 million to support the creation of a new myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) research center at Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

The new center — which will be led by OMF scientific advisory board member Ronald Tompkins and Harvard's Wenzhong Xiao — will be tasked with generating molecular data on muscle and other tissues affected by ME/CFS using genomics, proteomics, and ultrastructural analysis, according to OMF. It will also facilitate multi-center clinical studies on potential effective treatments for the conditions.

In December, OMF put up $1.2 million to fund the first year of operations for a newly established ME/CFS collaborative research center at Stanford University. The organization has also recently provided funding to expand the Stanford Data Center for the Severely Ill Patients study to include any data from its sponsored research initiatives.
