DNA Data Storage Startup Catalog Raises $10M in Series A Financing

NEW YORK – Catalog, a DNA-based data storage and computing firm founded by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said on Wednesday it has raised $10 million in Series A financing, bringing its total funding to date to $21 million.

Horizons Ventures led the oversubscribed round, joined by Airbus Ventures. The funds will be used for early product trials and continued R&D for its Shannon DNA writing and data storage platform, the firm said in a statement. The device, developed in collaboration with Cambridge Consultants, can write data at speeds of over 10 megabytes per second and can store up to 1.6 terabytes of compressed data in a single run.

"[Catalog cofounder] Hyunjun [Park] and his team are revolutionizing data storage and computation to meet acute needs for advanced, long-term storage capabilities essential to a growing number of industries," Airbus Ventures Partner Nicole Conner said in a statement.

Catalog said it recently demonstrated its technology by storing the full English text version of Wikipedia as synthetic DNA, totaling 16 gigabytes of data.
