Czech Asthma Study to Use Genedata for Data Analysis

NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Genedata will process and analyze data from a Czech Republic study on how air pollution may affect increasing asthma rates in young children, the company said today.

The Swiss company will use its Expressionist system on transcriptomics and genetic polymorphism data generated by the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague.

The asthma bronchiale project is an effort to investigate an "alarming trend" in the Ostrava Bartovice region, where the disease diagnosis has increased from 10 percent of children to 30 percent between 2001 and 2007, Genedata said. The research will focus on the effects of air pollution on gene expression and individual genetic susceptibility to toxic pollutants, and it will involve children from various regions of the country.

The study will use the Expressionist software because of a "previous successful collaboration studying genome-wide differential gene expression in children exposed to air pollution," Radim Sram, head of the Prague institute's Laboratory of Genetic Ecotoxicology, said in a statement.

Sram said that researchers have used the software to show how "transcriptomic analysis can be effectively used as a promising biomarker detection method for the effect of environmental carcinogens."

Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
