Compaq's AlphaServer Models Use Fastest Chip

HOUSTON--Compaq Computer here has introduced two new AlphaServer models based on its latest generation 64-bit Alpha 21264 (EV6) chip, which the company claims is the world's fastest processor. The new servers are tailored for high-performance technical applications such as bioinformatics and genomic analysis.

According to Compaq, the new AlphaServer GS series, unveiled worldwide last month, yields up to 2.5 times the application performance of the previous generation of the product. The GS series is a universal platform system that supports Digital Unix, OpenVMS, and Microsoft Windows NT.
