For its fourth round of "Starting Grant" awards, the European Research Council will support 480 early-stage investigators with just more than €670 million in total awards over five years, with each grant worth up to €2 million. In a release, the ERC says it saw a 42 percent surge in applications for these grants compared to last year. ERC President Helga Nowotny says this came as no surprise to her. "It confirms that demand for ERC funding continues unabatedly," she says in a statement.
