The University of Toronto announced the appointment of Steve Scherer as the new director of its McLaughlin Centre. Scherer holds the GlaxoSmithKline-CIHR Endowed Chair in Genetics and Genomics at The Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto.

Scherer and his research team have made numerous contributions to the genomics field, including mapping, sequencing and conducting disease gene studies of human chromosome 7. Additionally, he contributed to research on global gene copy number variation and his research team has linked CNVs to the etiology of autism.
