Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Professor Leena Peltonen-Palotie died this week of cancer at her home in Finland. Peltonen-Palotie was head of human genetics at the Sanger Institute, and she held appointments at the Broad Institute and the Institute for Molecular Medicine in Finland.


David Botstein, Francis Collins, and Eric Lander have been named co-winners of the 2010 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, which carries a purse of $500,000.


Affymetrix has appointed Timothy Barabe as its new executive vice president and chief financial officer. Barabe will report to Affymetrix's president and CEO Kevin King.

Barabe joins Affy from Human Genome Sciences, where he served as CFO since 2006. Before that, he held the same position at Regent Medical.
