The test is intended both for early screening purposes and the differential diagnoses of lung nodules detected during CT scans and x-rays. SomaLogic has partnered with Quest Diagnostics to commercialize the test, with a lab-developed version slated for launch next year.

Companies developing array- or biochip-based molecular diagnostics received a shot in the arm earlier this month under the Internal Revenue Service's $1 billion Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project program.

A number of prominent proteomics-based diagnostics developers were recipients of the grant and tax credit awards, which are being provided by the IRS through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Program.

The validation trials will each involve on the order of 400 patients and should be completed within a year, said a company official.

The agreement with NEC, which has purchased an equity stake in the company, is part of its plan to expand beyond its traditional focus on biomarker discovery and diagnostics development to become a "health information company" that can "provide actionable medical information to patients, physicians, and researchers," said an official.

The firms are building on a collaboration from last year, under which they unraveled the first X-ray structure of a DNA aptamer bound to its protein target.

NEC also is making an equity investment in SomaLogic, which is developing molecular diagnostics based on aptamers.

The two studies, published in Nature Precedings, are part of an effort by the Boulder, Colo.-based firm to gain more attention for the role its technology platform can play in diagnostics development.
