People in the News: Shashikant Kulkarni, Mark Powelson, and more

Shashikant Kulkarni

Baylor Miraca Genetics Laboratories has appointed Shashikant Kulkarni as its CSO and senior vice president of lab operations. He currently serves as vice chairman for research and professor in the department of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. Previously, Kulkarni managed one of the academic cytogenomics and molecular pathology laboratories at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He has also served on the scientific advisory boards of the NIH National Institute of General Medical Science's Coriell Institute, Bina Technologies, Swift Biosciences, Roche Diagnostics, Cancer Genomics Program at Princess Margaret Hospital-Toronto, Horizon Discovery, and Transgenomics.


Mark Powelson, William Olson, and Mark Bagnall

XCR Diagnostics has promoted COO Mark Powelson to CEO and president. Powelson joined the firm shortly after it was founded. He previously served as VP of sales and marketing at HandyLab, and has also held positions with Gen-Probe and Boehringer Mannheim, among others. Powelson replaces William Olson, who held the titles of president, CEO, and board chairman on an interim basis. Olson is CEO of Fluoresentric, the parent company of XCR. Olson will remain on XCR’s board, but will be replaced as chairman by board member Mark Bagnall.


Glenn Magnuson

Sequenom has appointed Glenn Magnuson as vice president of sales. He will report to Rob Lozuk, the senior vice president of commercial operations. Most recently, Magnuson served as vice president of sales for T2 Biosystems, and has previously worked in immunology sales at Abbott Diagnostics; women's diagnostic tests at Cytyc (Hologic); and clinical chemistry, hematology, pathology, and molecular and point of care technologies at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
