People in the News: Christopher O'Connell, Jill Mesirov, and more

Christopher O'Connell

Waters has appointed Christopher O'Connell as its new president, CEO, and member of its board of directors, effective September 2015. Retiring CEO Douglas Berthiaume will remain chairman of Waters' board.

O'Connell joins the company from Medtronic, where he was most recently president of the restorative therapies groups.


Jill Mesirov

The University of California, San Diego has tapped Jill Mesirov to serve as associate vice chancellor for computational health sciences and professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center. Most recently, Mesirov served as associate director and chief informatics officer at the Broad Institute. She also directed the Broad's computational biology and bioinformatics program. Prior to joining the Broad, Mesirov managed computational biology and bioinformatics for IBM's Healthcare/Pharmaceutical solutions group and served as director of research at Thinking Machines Corporation. 

Mesirov is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society, and the International Society for Computational Biology. She is a member of the National Cancer Institute Frederick Advisory Committee and previously served on the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research and the Data and Informatics Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health. 

She has a PhD in mathematics from Brandeis University.


Baroness Delyth Morgan

Baroness Delyth Morgan has been appointed chair of the UK's National Cancer Research Institute. She takes over from Harpal Kumar, the chief executive of Cancer Research UK. Morgan is the chief executive of Breast Cancer Now. Previously she was CEO at both Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.


Marylin Mermod Schule

Marylin Mermod Schule has joined Sophia Genetics as CFO. She was previously the deputy director at Benjamin de Rothschild Bank, and before that, was the CEO and CFO of Swiss clinic La Metairie.
