NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Axel Nielsen, COO of Decode Genetics, has resigned from the company, effective Jan. 1, 2010. The firm disclosed the resignation in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week, but it did not say whether it intends to search for a replacement.

Julie Gerberding, who was director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 2002 and 2009, has been named president of Merck Vaccines. Gerberding led CDC during a number of emergency response initiatives for bioterrorism, food-borne disease outbreaks, and natural disasters.

Andy Zaayenga has been named director of business development at HighRes Biosolutions.

He has been involved in life sciences automation at Tecan, SmarterLab, TekCel, and Zymark. He is a contributor to the Public Population Project in Genomics and an editor for the Journal of Combinatorial Chemistry & High Throughput Screening.

David Macdonald has taken on the job of interim CEO at GeneLink BioSiences. He takes over the role from Monte Taylor, who has been serving as CEO of both GeneLink and its Genewize subsidiary, but who will now focus on growing the GeneWize business.

Macdonald was president and COO at Nichols Institute Diagnostics, and he later became VP at Quest Diagnostics. He also was CEO and director at AltheaDx, CEO and president at Nanomix, and VP of global and business development at Nanogen.
