NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Combimatrix said this week that Daniel Forche has given notice that he plans to resign from his position as senior VP of sales and marketing for the firm's Combimatrix Diagnostics subsidiary to pursue other opportunities.
The National Science Foundation has chosen John Wingfield to be division director of Integrative Organismal Systems at NSF's Directorate for Biological Sciences. Wingfield is an environmental endocrinologist whose research has focused on environmental signals that affect seasonal birds and their mechanisms for coping with environmental stress, as well as how animals deal with climate change, endocrine disruption, and conservation biology.
Ramesh Ramanathan has been named chairman of the executive board of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team, an international network of clinical trial sites organized by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). Ramanathan is deputy director of TGen's Clinical Translational Research division, and he is medical director of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials at Scottsdale Healthcare.
The University of British Columbia has appointed Matthew Farrer to be the Donald Rix BC Leadership Chair in Genetic Medicine. The chair is supported by a roughly C$2.3 million (US$2.3 million) endowment from the Province of British Columbia through its Leading Edge Endowment Fund, C$2 million from LifeLabs, and $250,000 from the Genome BC Foundation.
Farrer was appointed as the Canada Excellence Research Chair of Neurogenetics and Translational Neuroscience at UBC in 2010, and he was a professor of molecular neuroscience and director of the Mayo Clinic's Neurogenetics Division. His current research interests focus on neurodegenerative disorders, such as the molecular genetics and functional modelling of movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia.
Michael Sundström has been appointed VP of Discovery Research at Karolinska Development and CEO of its Actar AB subsidiary. Most recently, he was managing director of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research.
Sundström also formerly was director of Structural Chemistry and chairman of Pharmacia's Oncology Research Review Committee and chief scientist of Oxford University's Structural Genomics Consortium.
He will assume the new post on Oct. 1.
Anna Barker, former deputy director for strategic scientific initiatives at the National Cancer Institute, is joining Arizona State University as director of its Transformative Healthcare Networks, as co-director of the Complex Adaptive Systems Initiative, and as a professor in ASU's School of Life Sciences. While at NCI, Barker developed programs such as the Cancer Genome Atlas and the Nanotechnology Alliance for Cancer, and she collaborated with the US Food and Drug Administration on the NCI-FDA Interagency Oncology Task Force.
SpringFire Laboratory Network has hired Gregory Stelzer to be scientific director. Stelzer most recently was senior VP of advanced development at Nodality, and he was chief science officer at Exagen Diagnostics, Esoterix (a subsidiary of Laboratory Corporation of America), and Cytometry Associates.
