BGI and Affymetrix to Co-Develop Microarrays for Agricultural Market

Affymetrix and China's BGI are collaborating on developing and marketing a portfolio of plant, crop, and livestock microarrays for genotyping, the organizations said last week.

Under the strategic partnership, which is non-exclusive, BGI will provide access to genomic markers from its 1000 Plant and Animal Reference Genomes Project, which started in 2010.

The arrays will be "spanning applications such as marker-assisted trait selection, parentage, quality control, and traceability," according to the partners.

The collaboration is notable because BGI has a strong relationship with Affy's rival in the microarray market, Illumina. Two years ago, BGI purchased 128 of Illumina's HiSeq 2000 sequencing systems.
