Third Rock Ventures has hired Felix Frueh as an entrepreneur-in-residence. Frueh, past president of the Medco Research Institute, will "provide strategic input on new and existing portfolio companies with a particular focus on personalized medicine," the venture capital firm said in an announcement.

While at Medco, Frueh led many of the PBM's personalized medicine focused programs and clinical utility research on genomic tests. Frueh's departure from Medco followed the pharmacy-benefit manager's acquisition by Express Scripts earlier this year.

Before joining Medco, Frueh was associate director for genomics at the US Food and Drug Administration, where he was the head of the genomics review team in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and chaired the first interdisciplinary pharmacogenomics review group.

The Human Frontier Science Program Organization has awarded Stephen Quake the 2013 Nakasone Award for his work developing technologies in biophysics, biological automation, genome analysis, and personalized medicine. Quake is a professor of bioengineering and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Stanford University. He is also a co-founder of Helicos Biosciences and Fluidigm.

BioMarker Strategies announced that Jack Davis, a co-founder and former CEO of Dianon Systems, has been named executive chairman of the company. Davis will serve as both chairman of the board and as the senior strategic management adviser for BioMarker Strategies. Before Dianon, Davis was division VP and general manager of the diagnostics products unit at Abbott Diagnostics.
