PerkinElmer last week announced key management promotions that will become effective Jan. 1.

Robert Friel was appointed vice chairman and elected to the board of directors. Prior to this, Friel was senior vice president and then executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Jeffrey Capello was appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer. Capello was vice president of Finance, including corporate control and treasury, since 2001.

Beckman Coulter last week introduced Cell Lab Quanta SC, the second version of the Cell Lab Quanta platform it launched earlier this year.

The Quanta SC combines side light scatter detection and a third fluorescent channel with Coulter volume measurement to perform multi-parameter cell counting and sizing, Beckman said. Up to five parameters at once can be studied with the system. The additional fluorescent channel and side light scatter capabilities allow users to measure cellular granularity for three-color immunophenotyping applications, Beckman said. Quanta SC is offered with a 488-nm laser and a mercury arc lamp for UV-excitable dyes.


Guava Technologies has introduced the EasyCyte Mini, the latest addition to Guava's benchtop cell analyzers.

The EasyCyte Mini features the same enabling microcapillary technology as Guava's other EasyCyte products, but incorporated a blue laser, thus expanding the selection of fluorescent dyes available to users, Guava said. The Mini runs the entire suite of Guava's turnkey assays, such as GFP expression and viability, cell counting, apoptosis, cell-cycle analysis, and antigen detection.
