Aurora Discovery has been awarded US Patent No. 6,861,035, “Multi-well platforms, caddies, lids, and combinations thereof.”

According to its abstract, the patent protects multi-well platforms, lids, caddies and any combination thereof. The multi-well platforms comprise a plurality of wells that can be of any shape and can be arranged in any ornamental pattern. The lid comprises an area corresponding to the well field. The caddy has a footprint approximately that of a standard 96-well microtiter plate. When the multi-well platform is engaged with the caddy, the wells of the well-field of the multi-well platform are preferably not obscured by the caddy when viewed from the bottom of the combination, the abstract states.

Ramot University Authority for Applied Research & Industrial Development has been awarded US Patent No. 6,861,220, “Genetic screening methods.”

According to its abstract, the patent protects a method for screening molecules which have a synthetic lethal property when in combination with a gene of interest carrying a non-lethal mutation. The method comprises the steps of: Transfecting a first reporter gene into mammalian cells having a genome comprising a gene of interest which carries a non-lethal mutation, or a genome which is null of the gene of interest; selecting clones stably expressing the first reporter gene; introducing into the cells a survival plasmid comprising a functioning copy of the gene of interest, a second reporter gene, selectable marker, an origin of DNA replication, and a nuclear antigen gene essential for replication of the plasmid within the cells, wherein the survival plasmid is autonomously replicating and spontaneously lost from the cells; growing the cells in the presence of a selection compound which selects for the selectable marker; selecting cell clones stably expressing the second reporter gene and the functioning copy of the gene of interest; removing selection for the selectable marker; and adding molecules destined for screening of their ability to impose selective pressure enforcing retention of the unstable survival plasmid, thus determining survival plasmid retention in cells and identifying a molecule having a synthetic lethal property when in combination with the non-lethal mutated gene of interest, the abstract states.

Cis Bio International has been awarded US Patent No. 6,861,264, “Method of measuring the luminescence emitted in a luminescent assay.”

According to its abstract, the patent protects a method of measuring the luminescence emitted in a luminescent assay, which makes it possible to correct certain perturbations due to the measuring medium. The method comprises employing at least one luminescent tracer compound and a luminescent compound used as an internal reference, which, when exposed to the same excitation wavelength, are capable of emitting at wavelengths 1 and 2 respectively, either by direct luminescence or by the induction of a luminescent emission, and correcting the luminescence measurement emitted at wavelength 2 on the basis of the measurement of the luminescence emitted at wavelength 1. The invention further relates to the use of the method in a homogeneous method of detecting and/or determining an analyte, and to a device for carrying it out.
